MARCH 2008

OUR SIXTH ANNIVERSARY - TIME FOR SOME EXCITING CHANGES

We wanted to celebrate the sixth anniversary of Crush at the end of April in style, so we asked architect-designer Ralph Giannone to come up some exciting changes for the restaurant. Starting April 14th you will be able to see it all for yourself. But as with wine, great things don't happen overnight, so Crush will be closed from March 21st to April 14th. Drop by for a glass of wine or dinner before the 21st and we'll tell you about the changes.

A big event to help us celebrate our re-opening will be the Canadian Opera Company Fine Wine Auction on April 17th. Tickets are just $35. And if you have wine to donate to the auction it's not too late. Just get in touch with Sarah Jarvis, who is the COC's special events manager. 416-306-2305 or email: sarahj@coc.ca

TOP 10 PICKS - GREAT VALUE FROM AROUND THE WORLD

This month Jamie and Eric have picked a wide-ranging group of excellent wines at affordable prices, starting with a couple of gems from Niagara.

1. 2005 Chardonnay, Le Clos Jordanne (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
This remains Canada’s most popular winery.  Beautifully crafted Chard from Niagara’s joint venture between Vincor and the Boisset house. CSPC# 33936  $25

2. 2005 Pinot Noir, Le Clos Jordanne (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
A matching red. CSPC# 33894  $25

3. 1997 Tokaji Szamorodni Dry, Puklus (Tokaji, Hungary)
One of the most unique wines we have tried all year.  Smells of sweet dried apricots and figs, with walnut shell undertones.  Like a Hungarian Sherry. CSPC # 48058  $13.95

4. 2005 Cotes de Provence ‘Cuvée Carolle’, Domaine de la Sauveuse (Provence, France)
Blend of Cabernet, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre.  Deep and plummy with a good mix of spice and soft tannin.  Organic wine. $19.95  rouge et blanc 416.858.0864

5. 2006 Carineña ‘Gabarde Uno’, Bodegas Lomablanca (Carineña, Spain)
Big time value in this Grenache-based wine from Spain.  One to buy by the case to use as a personal house wine. $15.95  Worldwide Cellar 905 508 4100

6. 2004 Riesling Spätlese ‘Herrnsheim’, Freiherr Heyl Zu (Rhein, Germany)
Another great organic bio-dynamic wine.  Pungent Riesling with notes of preserved lemon and lime, chalk and wet stones. CSPC# 721985, $ 23.75

7. 2006 Toscana IGT ‘Adone’, Collemattoni (Tuscany, Italy)
95% Sangiovese with 5% Merlot.  Dust black cherries, earth and leather dominate.  This is a great everyday wine from the beautiful town of Montalcino. Stem Wine Group 416.548.8824

8. 2006 Rioja, Bodegas Darien (Rioja, Spain)
100% Tempranillo.  This is the ideal taverna wine to be served by the pint. Stem Wine Group 416.548.8824

9. 2006 Malbec, Alto Las Hormigas (Mendoza, Argentina)
Amazing winery offering some of the world’s best value.  Deep and juicy Malbec fruit.  Real quality here. CSPC#640490 $ 13.85

10. 2005 ‘Three Valleys’, Ridge Vineyards (California, U.S.A.)
Our favourite favourite winery in California.  Mainly Zin, with a little Petit Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Rich and decadent fruit and spice but not overdone.  It retains wonderful elegance and acidity. CSPC# 652875   $25.95
