NOVEMBER 2007
A quick reminder as the holiday season approaches: if you're organizing a party this year please give us a call soon as dates for our private rooms are quickly filling up. 416-977-1234.
SPAIN BY THE GLASS
This month Spain has top billing on our extensive wine-by-the-glass list with nine exciting wines - three whites and six reds that you can try individually or in flights of three 2 oz glasses. Chef Michael Wilson has created appetizer plates that match the wines and make for a perfect snack at the bar. Calamari and chorizo stew, pork belly braised in almond milk, and cod carpaccio with chili cider drizzle all go beautifully with a flight of the whites. All the details on the wines and the appetizers are on the web.
TOP WINE PICKS
Jamie and Eric's top wine picks for November go with the month's Spanish theme, with a little bit of Germany, Italy and France added to the mix.
| 1. |
2006 Rueda Verdejo/Sauvignon Blanc, Telmo Rodriguez
Toro, Spain $15.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
Oenologist Telmo Rodríguez, formerly of Remelluri in Rioja, is now resurrecting great vineyards all throughout Spain. His first act with us is a Rueda, a blend of Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Viura. A bright and fresh white that is like having lime sorbet.

| 2. |
2006 Rias Biaxas ‘O Rosal’, Terras Gauda
Rias Baixas, Spain $24.95 CSPC# 40238
70 year old Albariño vines are blended with Loureira and Caiño Branco. The Galician vineyards are surrounded by orchards so it is no surprise that we can detect floral notes of apple blossom mixed with chalk and slate.
|
| 3. |
2006 Toro ‘Dehesa Gago’, Telmo Rodriguez
Toro, Spain $19.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
Telmo Rodríguez’s second entry is from the town of Toro which is experiencing its own renaissance recently. 100% Tinto de Toro, (the local name for Tempranillo), it is rich and concentrated, tipping the scales at 15% alcohol. Like a blueberry and cherry coulis.

| 4. |
2004 Ribera del Duero Crianza, Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro
Ribera del Duero, Spain $34.95 Iberowine.ca
Being a Crianza, this wine has spent a minimum of 1 year in wood and 1 year in the bottle before its release. A monumental battle of lavish oak and deep plum jam leaving behind casualties of dried herbs and pencil shavings.
|
| 5. |
1998 Rioja Gran Reserva Especial‘Castillo YGAY’, Marques de Murietta
Rioja, Spain $59.00 CSPC# 43935
Tradition has been to age the wines for very long periods in oak. One of the most sought after wines in Spain and only made in exceptional years. A tidal wave of scents from wild berries and dried orange peel to cedar and tobacco. The blood of Rioja.
|
| 6. |
2005 Tinta Joven ‘Caracol Serrano’ Bodegas Y Vinedos de Murcia
Jumilla, Spain $18.95 Wineonline.ca A blend of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Medium weight with loads of juicy red fruit. This is the wine you would be served in a taverna by the pint.
|
| 7. |
1998 Rioja Gran Reserva ‘Prado Enea’, Bodegas Muga
Rioja, Spain $55.00 CSPC# 743310
If the above Gran Reserva is the blood of Rioja then this one is its soul. Muga’s best selection combines all of Tempranillo’s power with its ability to show restraint and finesse. It possesses a virtual spice rack and herb garden nose. An uplifting experience.
|
| 8. |
1995 Riesling Spätlese ‘Erbacher Marcobrunn’, Schloss Schönborn
Rheingau, Germany $28.95 CSPC# 53280
Another great chance to try an aged Riesling. This wine masterfully combines sweetness and acidity.
|
| 9. |
2005 Barbera d’Alba ‘Torriglione’, Renato Ratti
Piedmont, Italy $18.95 CSPC# 47266
From one of Barolo’s grandfathers. Black cherry notes dominate. Rich in tradition.
|
| 10. |
2004 Gigondas, Domaine de Font Sane
Rhône Valley, France $24.95 CSPC# 735779
Very good producer of burly Grenache. The price is just right.

and someting really special for the cellar...
1996 Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva ‘Unico’, Vega Sicilia
Ribera del Duero, Spain $349.00 CSPC# 675918
The quintessential Spanish red. Beyond anything you have ever tasted. This wine takes you on a magic carpet ride for the senses.
